Generating Electricity with Solar Panels

What are main advantages of solar panels?
Solar panels use renewable energy. Having solar panels could promote solar panels that lead globally to less CO2 production.

Where are best practices using solar panels?
Solar panels can provide electricity where electric cable can't. This can be your solar mobile phone, notebook, car, yacht, remote cottage, etc. Note that solar panel produce energy constantly. Storing energy in batteries is not so efficient so burning produced energy all the time is good idea.

How can I consume all energy that solar panels produce?
Any device that is turned on "around the clock" will make use of produced energy instantly. Solar panel cellphone is good idea. Some more examples of such devices for home are: air conditioner, aquarium, ambient lights, hot water, etc.

Can solar panels provide additional isolation for building?
Yes, but in most cases green roof may be more cheap&effective.

Are solar panels hail proof?
No, but insurance company can lower investment risks. If softball-sized hail is common where you plan to have solar panels consider getting "hail protection film".

What kind of roof is needed for residential solar panels?
South facing roof with no high buildings in nearby that give shadow is optimal. New buildings near equator are ideal.

Gnome vs KDE Comparison

Gnome is desktop environment while KDE is desktop suite. With KDE desktop you get integrated suite of applications. In opposition Gnome applications should also run natively on other Linux desktops like XFCE. Most KDE application names start with letter "K" and requre KDE componetns to run.

KDE?
  • Some Linux distros that use KDE: Backtrack, Slax, Kubuntu.
  • KDE is free and user-friendly advanced desktop.
  • Known KDE-native programs:Quanta-Plus, Amarok, Kmail

OR

Gnome?
  • Some Linux distros that use Gnome: Ubuntu, gNewSense
  • The GNOME project puts heavy emphasis on simplicity, usability, and making things “just work”
  • Known GTK+ programs: GIMP, Inkscape, Gnumeric, Audacity
Gtk+ is also in use in some lightweight desktops for old computers.

Why is KDE vs Gnome question important?
It's not. Fast computer can run both Gnome and KDE applications at the same time. Running applications from both desktops require a bit more RAM memory. With modern software installation programs, you may accidentily install KDE components anyway.

How do this two environments display applications?
While Gnome use GTK+, KDE use Qt4 to display windows.

Does some desktop "own" some applicatons?
There are many excellent applications for GTK+ toolkit while few good applications work with KDE components installed only.

Filmmaker Spotlight - Martin Sellers

Filmmaker Spotlight
Martin Sellers
By Matthew Jimenez

Rough Cut would like to recognize Martin Sellers for his outstanding work and achievements.

Matt-

The first time I really got to work with Martin was during a brutal but fun three day weekend for Jay McGee's Senior Project, of which Martin was DP for. Each day was about thirteen hours long. His work is outstanding and beautiful, I have no doubt that Martin will make anything look amazing and meaningful if you give him a camera. I wish you the best man.

I asked Martin why he has chosen film as a medium to express his ideas and creativity.

Martin-
Why Film? Film has always been fun to me, I like playing with lights and camera angles, making crazy contraptions to get the shot, there's always something to be filmed. Plus, who wouldn't like being able to say 'I made that awesome ass movie'?

I asked about some of his inspirations.

Martin-
My biggest influence would probably surfing films like puddles in the sky, a broke down melody, and the September sessions, I try to apply the rhythm and flow of those filming style to narratives.

Inspirations

Then I asked about his favorite filmmakers and films.

Martin-
Favorite filmmaker, don't really have one. I like a lot of them but don't have a favorite.

My favorite film is Mongol, hands down.

Favorite Film

I was curious about his plans for the future.

Martin-
My future plans are become a DP, not so much in the Hollywood scene, travel documentary, and surf films. Now that I've had a small insight to the travel filming world I feel like I could really get into it. Also I've always been big into surfing, if get a crack at a surfing film I know I can make some epics stuff happen.

Here are a few highlights of Martin Sellers work. Check it out.

Special thanks to: Opa from making it all happen
