Gnome is desktop environment while KDE is desktop suite. With KDE desktop you get integrated suite of applications. In opposition Gnome applications should also run natively on other Linux desktops like XFCE. Most KDE application names start with letter "K" and requre KDE componetns to run.
KDE?
- Some Linux distros that use KDE: Backtrack, Slax, Kubuntu.
- KDE is free and user-friendly advanced desktop.
- Known KDE-native programs:Quanta-Plus, Amarok, Kmail

Gnome?
- Some Linux distros that use Gnome: Ubuntu, gNewSense
- The GNOME project puts heavy emphasis on simplicity, usability, and making things “just work”
- Known GTK+ programs: GIMP, Inkscape, Gnumeric, Audacity
Gtk+ is also in use in some lightweight desktops for old computers.
Why is KDE vs Gnome question important?
It's not. Fast computer can run both Gnome and KDE applications at the same time. Running applications from both desktops require a bit more RAM memory. With modern software installation programs, you may accidentily install KDE components anyway.
How do this two environments display applications?
While Gnome use GTK+, KDE use Qt4 to display windows.
Does some desktop "own" some applicatons?
There are many excellent applications for GTK+ toolkit while few good applications work with KDE components installed only.
