Linux Puppy distribution boots off cd-rom. It's one of the fastest linux distros out there. It weights 40 mb and can be fully loaded in ram. Apart from ubuntu it plays mp3s by default.
Puppy can make good use of your drives. It can use NTFS drive space on hard or USB drive for faster boot, or it can be "installed" in single file (no need to make Linux partition)
However not all new computers support
usb boot, but when using
chameleon mode (also called supper floppy mode) puppy linux boots of usb, but appear to computer as floppy drive, cd rom so you can
boot on computers that don't support usb bootbesides you can get
usb stick for free these days
