MFS December 09 Cheryl Timmins

By Robert S. Pearson

Last month, for the first time, an AI Tampa film student stepped into the Spotlight, and Andrew Keeton shared his work, inspirations, and plans for the future. This month I was able to speak with Cheryl Timmins who, along with Andrew, is one of the first of two students to graduate from the AI Tampa film program. I have known Cheryl for some time now, and have always been impressed by both her work as well as character. While speaking with Cheryl I learned that she earned two degrees before coming to the Art Institute, a BA in Psychology form the Sophie Newcomb College, and a MED in Early Childhood Emotional Disturbances from Tulane University. With two degrees under her belt already, I asked Cheryl why she decided to study film.

Cheryl;
I’m an educator at heart and film gives me a visual outlet to express myself and hopefully open the eyes of others in the process. I believe indie films are on the rise and I relish this idea as this is my niche as a producer. If my work makes a difference in at least one life, I’ve accomplished what I’ve set out to do. Two or more is lagniappe.

Seeing as Cheryl has much appreciation for independent filmmaking, I asked her which filmmakers influenced her the most?

Favorite Filmmakers

Errol Morris, Sidney Lumet, Aleksandr Sokurov, David Lynch, Martin Scorsese

As a filmmaker I understand how much inspiration can be drawn from others in the business, but I asked Cheryl who, in her personal life, has influenced her the most?

Cheryl;

My largest personal influence has been my daughter. I adopted her from China at 15 months old and she just turned 8. I’ve never looked at the world the same since I was lucky enough to look at everything through her eyes.

I wanted to know, outside of her family and role-models, what films have have shaped Cheryl as an artist? Maybe it was unfair, but I asked to only mention 3 to 5.

Cheryl;

This is like asking a chocoholic “What is your favorite brand of chocolate?” Three to five films seems so limiting but I’ll take a stab at it.

Favorite Films

The Shawshank Redemption, Modern Times, On The Water Front, A Beautiful Mind

Well there is no doubting her taste, and as I mentioned above I think Cheryl produces great work and has an awesome character, but I thought I would get a few other onions. I asked Dr. John Muehl, a film professor of ours and former AI Tampa Dean, what he had to say about Cheryl.

Dr. John Muehl;

Cheryl's strengths are her determination and her willingness to take charge of her own education. When the rest of the students are on break, Cheryl is attending a filmmaking workshop. She strives to achieve excellence. Her determination will lead to success in the film and video industry.

Tyler Martinolich is a film professor at the University of Tampa as well as The Ringling School for the Arts, and the Programing Director for the Sun Screen Film Festival. He is a former professor of Cheryl's, so I asked him what he thought of her work ethic.

Tyler Martinolich;

James Cameron once said "The film industry is about saying 'no' to people, and inherently you cannot take 'no' for an answer." It takes drive, passion, a level head and a willingness to never take 'no' for an answer. I know Cheryl Timmins to have those qualities. Cheryl has that rare spark that's instantly identifiable, and will serve her well in whatever pursuit she follows in the future.

Cheryl Timmins has earned the respect of her peers, professors, and professionals in the business. She recently was awarded an internship with the Canne film festival at the The American Pavilion in the worldwide festival, so I asked Cheryl what her plans for the future are?

Cheryl;

My dream is to produce indie films, preferably documentaries that don’t bore people to death. Finally, I get to pursue my passion. Do what you love and the money will follow.

Special Thanks

Cheryl;

Special thanks to Alan Cohen and Reverend Duffy Rutledge, my mentors who encouraged me to follow my heart, my family for their love and support and to Hilda Manning for teaching me about unconditional love.

I want to thank Cheryl for letting us look at her past and bright future. To learn more about her, and see more of Cheryl's work visit the link below.

Linux disk space distribution mapping

Discover occupied disk space distribution and effectively view disk space usage distribution use beobab (on gnome -seem to be also kde KDirStat)

It's part of gnome tools

sudo apt-get install gnome-utils

Tree map View will reveal where are directories that waste your disk space better than terminal commands.

Additionally locate big files and sort them by size in terminal if you wish, check filesharing incomplete files, empty trash, empty wine temp folder(as on windows)

Old linux kernels (each 89 Mb) were found as "disk eaters" on out system.

To check folders from time to time use simple cron job that opens trash&incompletes&other stuff you may want to check when you return to computer

A cron job may be used to remind you of a low disk space and then run trash&incompletes&other stuff, when disk space is high, cron notification reminds you to add something to downloads.

There comes many programs installed by "default". To uninstall em go to your packet manager and view installed applications. It should be safe to uninstall 'em all.

Increase Information Exchange by putting Computers more Together

Both public access computers and home computers are used by people. These people communicate with each other. Maybe (beautiful) computer user next to you just asks you for some help or your sister make sad face as you begin playing solitaire (most played game on planet) again.

Todays social networks can't produce full communication. When communicating online, you usually can't see someones face gestures and hear no voice. So it is always fun to have someone beside while using computer.

Public computers in libraries run without sound and users can't communicate due to silent environment and distance between computers.

At home portable devices such as notebook and mobile phone may increase or decrease distance between members.

By building powerful (3d graphics) but expensive computers many kids stay at home computers isolated from their (local) peers - Friends.

Computers can be used 24/7 and can be shared.

Solution:Small space powerful public computers

Control Room Temperature with Computer Script

Control room temperature by joining Distributed Computing project

Now it's possible to increase room temperature by donating unused CPU cycles (and get money rewards) to distributed_computing project when room is to cold

Cpu (blue) and disk (red) temperatures are steady(0-300 on x axis), when we kill distributed_computing temperatures fall (at 300), when laptop fan slows down (450) temperatures rise a slightly, and then stay at low level. High temperatures are used to increase room temperature

Hot processor means hot room, cold processor means colder room. Turning processor hot with distributed computing will slightly control room temperature.

This bash code for crontab needs installed mprime script as described here

######################

Control Temperatures using Distributed Computing

a=$(cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/temperature | grep C | awk '{
print $2 }'| sed -n 1p )
b=$(cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/temperature | grep C | awk '{
print $2 }'| sed -n 2p )

echo current cpu temperature: $a
echo current disk temperature: $b

#when to turn distributed computing on and off
#a range 68 degrees on, off at 90
#b range: on at 54, off at 59

#turning off
if [[ $a -gt 90 && $b -gt 59 ]]; then
echo killing distributed_computing
/usr/bin/notify-send -u normal -t 4000 \
'ending distributed computing to decrease room&cpu&disk temperature and compute'
killall mprime

#turning on
if [[ $a -lt 68 && $b -lt 54 ]]; then
echo starting distributed computing to increase room temperature and compute
/opt/mprime/mprime&
/usr/bin/notify-send -u normal -t 4000 \

Consoles comparison:Wii, Xbox, Playstation3

Consoles bring high grade gaming hardwere for low price (+u pay for each game) and you are able to play with your friends on two gamepads. Good for social life in your living room

Review:

Wii
Nintendo is useful for all ages. As well women and your grandpa will enjoy playing wii with kids.
No violence&good fun
Popular game:Mario&derivatives
You are able to play older consoles like N64, SNES & Gamecube with emulator on PC for free.

Wii is good for exercising. Cheap console offers playing box, golf, ski jumping (wii fit addon) and other sports like if you are really sporting. Match in box may make you sweating, really! But in computer era who sports anymore?? strange but newer mouses are made such way that you will not need to move much. But if you are fitness fan?

xbox& xbox 360
This one is newer and from Microsoft. As wii is much cheaper than ps3 and games seem to be similar games that run on pc. Microsoft is trying something with this "games for windows" thing
Xbox is best for those who want best graphics&playability ratio

Playstation 3 (ps3)
This is the most powerful (and electricity eating)
It's ability to show blu-ray movies (1080p resolution) is brilliant, however you won't be able to play most games in full hd- Sony seemed to prefer best graphics over sharp picture.. so there is a doubt what kind of tv you will need for that.
It's well equipped, it can play media from usb, has drive and the non slim version is known to run Linux (for browsing& someone said to play killer instinct via snes emulation running in yellowdog linux)

popular games: PES soccer, Tekken, Metal gear solid, Final fantasy, Motorstorm, wipeout HD

Ps3 seem to be for those who like coutting edge graphics.

However there is emulator that successfully play Ps2 games on windows&linux computers. The truth is that most games (not newer) run on computer. If you are into Sega games you will find all emulators&games. Computer is "Sega palace" at the moment.

Older console may give you gaming equipment&movie player&music player for you living room for low price

Design beautiful text logo easily

First thing noticed about gimp image editor was it's ability to make easily rich titles.  To make such logo (fully automatic) just write text and then go to filters -> alpha to logo and select something you like from pictures (you can modify these logos)
