Member of the Month - July 2010 - Sophia Juarbe

Rough Cut Member of the month
Sophia Juarbe
By Matthew J. Jimenez

This month Rough Cut would like to recognize Sophia Juarbe for all her contributions, participation and support. Thank you Sophia.

"I herd about Sophia before I met her, as I was in need of an FX make-up person and Ben Hammond recommended her. Sophia displayed her skills and professionalism from day one, and over the last few months she has always been reliable, providing my production with an added sense of stability. She deserves this honor because Sophia has worked hard to coordinate, promote, and document the last few Rough Cut events. I would recommend Sophia to any filmmaker who is looking for an intelligent, hard working, and dependable person to round out his or her set. Congratulations on receiving the 'Member of the Month' title, and I look forward to working with you in the future."
-Robert S. Pearson

"I met Sophia in my first class at Ai. I got to know her along the way. In my first film class, I needed an actress so I asked Sophia if she could do it, even though she wasn't in the class. She took time out of her busy schedule to come out and help me film. This is just one of many examples of Sophia's dedication and compassion for helping other students. Thank you Sophia I hope to keep working with you."

Rocky Juarez hits the double-end bag

This is the best double-end bag work I've ever seen. I have trained on one daily for 3 years and to emulate Juarez's mechanics is to pursue a new kind of perfection.

Make temporarly backups

Want to modify some configuration file, but want to make backup first?
Sometime you need to make backup, but don't want to make more file mess on hard drive.. Solution: Copy file that you want to modifly to trash. File will be accessible on a short run, but won't bother you anymore on a long run. This gives backup if something goes wrong in next few minutes while modifiying that file.

Plyometric push-ups

The Dartmouth College Boxing Club’s trainer and Barbados national champion, Elvis Lowe, can do a push-up and finish in standing position. Most humans are not capable of achieving this, but you can take your power to the next level by the ambitious plyo-pushup. Simply clap your hands between each pushup. I typically do 3 sets of 8 reps with plenty of rest in between. Your abs will also benefit.

The most common biceps mistake

If your upper arms are moving when you lift the bar doing curls, your form is off, so listen up. Keep your elbows at your side. Your upper arms should be perpendicular to the floor. Only your forearms should be moving. It’s not about heavy weights, it’s about proper form to isolate the biceps group. You’ll notice increased strength within a few weeks.

Injury tip: Shin Splints

This form of tendonitis affects most types of athletes at one time or another. Stretching your calves aggressively for 5 minutes daily can help prevent this. Stick with running shoes for workouts involving foot and ankle motion such as boxing sparring, jumping rope, running, plyometrics and field drills. Chronic shin splints often necessitate custom orthotics and motion-control running shoes.

Product shapshot: The SKLZ Power Base

This is not as dumb as it looks. The ball travels up to 20 yards and returns to you at easily received speed on the ground. You can work around cones or a ladder without getting tangled. It’s a little awkward at first, but after a few workouts you nearly forget about the cord. By the way, the cord is almost invisible and makes your spiral look immaculate to onlookers.

The BMX challenge

You see it every day—people riding bikes to stay fit. But how many are really challenging themselves? For serious athletes trying to cross-train on a bike, the temptation, and necessity (on downhills) to lazily cruise warrants some caution. You need to push yourself on a bike to maintain an advanced level of conditioning. Here’s a solution: ride a BMX bike on an official track. No need to land jumps, just focus on speed and contol. Rest for 30-60 seconds between laps. Take your 20-inch, 1-speed bad boy around the course and you’ll be sucking wind within minutes. The sport challenges the abs, pecs and back as much as quads. You will wonder why you never tried this exhilarating X-sport.

The beach soccer workout

Remember the first beach scene in The Karate Kid? If you can avoid short-shorts and the Cobra Kai, soccer in the sand can be a swank way to mix things up. Dribble the ball barefoot for several miles, keeping it as close as possible on the hard sand near the water. Dodge all objects with precision! The challenge it two-fold: the speed of the ball is greater than on grass, and (2) it will roll to one side, toward the water, if you’re not on top of it. It’s about control, especially when there’s a 3-year old and his sand castle in the way. This is a great variation in your running routine as it works your entire lower leg and ankle-stabilizing muscles in a way that linear running cannot recapitulate.

The functional jab

Practicing the power jab is great for your off-days when the rest of your body is recovering. But integrating defense can turn it into a functional and challenging workout. Create situations relevant to a fight. Practice slips, rocks, angles and footwork. Execute perfect form and guard. Notice how a simple punch requires your feet, legs and torso to work properly. Include 3 x 3-minute rounds in your boxing workouts.

Shoe selection made simple

No matter what your sport, you have negotiated sole-searching on numerous occasions. A good general rule is to match the shape of the sole with the shape of your foot. Wet your feet and put down some paper on the floor. Step onto the paper when your feet are semi-dry and study the shape. Does your foot curve significantly, or is it pretty straight? Is there an arch, or has most of your foot made contact? If you’re straight-footed with little or no arch, look for a shoe from Saucony or Adidas, as these tend to be better suited for over-pronators (feet rolling inward on contact). You may also need orthotics if these biomechanical problems cause shin splints or knee problems. It is best to avoid Nike and Asics if you are flat-footed, over-pronate or are a heavy heel-striker. If you have good arches and your feet are crescent-shaped, you have far more options, since most shoes are constructed with your mechanics in mind.

Track tip of the day: Negative splits. Do 8 x 400 meter intervals with 2 minutes rest. Beat your time in each successive rep. If you screw up, start over--from the beginning, baby.

The Nike Land Shark MID

Anyone who works out on a football or soccer field at 5 AM wearing running shoes is not going all-out. To really cut around in drills, you need cleats. I found these for $50 last weekend. Totally compatible with my custom orthotics and the ankle support is good. They also dry out quickly.

Tom Brady's Z Drill

Fast twitch challenges

My biggest weakness is my oxidative muscle phenotype. I can go for distance, but I lack explosive quickness. Dropping back and moving around in the pocket with emphasis on pushing off after the foot plants is a great way to work on quickness in the legs and ankles--really important for maneuvering around an opponent in the ring.

Konung 3 Ties of the Dynasty - Walkthrough

General:
  • Every settlement has portal.
  • To get more experience&money walk forest paths and do missions.
  • Build army. Hire warriors that are in the forest. They can be very helpful but can block your way out houses (tell them to go away with ctrl+click) and they won't travel with portals.
  • Weight make you slower. Agility and stamina make character faster.
  • Quicksaving is not possible but try to save as many times as possible. Saving can be very quick if you click on random slot.

Miroslavl

This doors in Miroslavl were opened by clicking on them (click on image to view map).

You hear about treasure behind idol in tavern. Right-click on hunters scroll shall dig treasure out. Cheaty merchant Feofan is found in house near tavern. Locate him and then he tries to escape so pay attention where he run and follow him. Finally he tries to give you coins. You can give Bursor that money to become milita:

Must pay taxes to become militia and must become militia to exit Miroslavl

Miroslavl forest
The easiest way to get rid of bandits and wolves is to run to militia once spotted. After clearing the path out of Miroslav you are be rewarded with money from Captain.

Now you should be able to go to:

Riverside
Talk to Elder and then to Rado. He tells to save his honey at north of village and to the east by shore.

Back in forest defeat spiders that are "squatting" bee place. If that is too hard for your current level you can just run to the other side of forest. Best way to deal with spiders is ranged attack.

Always talk to people that appear on map. There may be valuable items inside village houses.

Lower Camp
Healer has mission for you to get that thief Jarun. Talk to Ratibour. He wants you to go to Magi to lift a curse on his brother. Magi is in the forest. To collect items that Magi want, defeat all the beasts in that forest.

Forest camp
Two carriers can be found in nearby camp for delivery mission. Jarl tells you about sacred fire mission. The vampires are easily killed if you run back to village where guards deal with them instead.

Freestead
Warriors that are blocking way out of village can be defeated. (Ctrl+click)

   Portal in Freestead.

Nabwick
Go to Korusha. He is in quarrel with blacksmith that want his potions back. First obtain ingredients and then mix them carefully to get that acid.

Blackwood
To enter library defeat bandits that hide have stolen chalice in in their chest. Then clean forest. There is a unlockable chest in library. To check other chest you need to visit librarian's missing daughter Elena that is happy in love in Freestead. Let her be.

Byzantine outpost
Go to Nabwic elder and then Blackwood tavern.
Portal in Byzantine outpost is before entrance on the right.
After fight it is useful to carry many valuables to merchants. Advanced swords seem to cost most at minimal weight. There is possibility to enter cave on left.

Wulftam
Iberian merchant is not allowed to sell wine. Talk to elder.
Miller wants grain. It can be bought&carried from next village.

Seaville
Talk to merchant about exotic goods you've heard about in Hillborough. Get rid of elder and then return to merchant. He sends you to beach where you'll be attacked by pirates. Check their pockets for scroll.

Hillborough
Master want you to go to wishing well. You won't get any money but you can give him his debt note instead. After talk with bursar you get get chance to buy exotic weapon.

Magus of Hydvale wants exilir of life. Healer of Seaville and Chronicle of Blackwood have some information about it.

Exilir of life can be made from holy water. Full recipe for exilir of life is:
Tucstan --> Tucstan solution --> Tucstan decoctation --> add honey --> add Paris (can be bought from Oakwood healer)

Hunters leader in Hydvale tells where to hunt for Moon werewolf. Change to full moon night with "T" on keyboard.

Gnatmire
To make elder happy give him random potion mix(hazardous mix).
In forest between Hillborough are Gold miners. They give you stone with rune. For a better deal buy a slave in nearby village. Gold mine bandits have poison that you need later. New village healer can be found in Hillborough. In Gold mine is also Crock assistant that robbed his merchant in Hillborough.

Byridge
Caravan leader shows you the way to the village from forest. They should wait at forest entrance. In village you need to defeat lizards. Remember to get item from Lizard leader. Village captain can become Ratibour or other band warrior. Then compain Olysia to old Magus and leave her there. Magus shall give the scroll.

Flying isle ruins
Blockades can be opened by levelers. Look for first leveler on other side of blockade and use arrow. Second leveler is burning lamp. You should have magu stuff by now, try using exilir of life on it to remove magical blockade. After obtaining Champions sword there is Mirslav captain waiting for you. It's a trap. Deafeat them or run as quickly as possible.

Take screen photo without reflection

What is more hacky that screenshot? Screen photo.
  • take photo of another cellphone display to store information from it (image, email address, url, phone number)
i.e:
Situation1:It happed that some person wanted to save her email address into someone smartphone. I wanted this contact as well so I quickly made a photo. That was really "taken by surprise".

Situation2:I want to store information to someone else cellphone quickly, i just typed my nummber on my cellphone display and shoot a pic with his mobile.

But how to prevent screen reflection?
There may be no time to turn off flash so always shoot under angle while reflective surface is not positioned in the photo center.

Angle shooting and positioning "reflective" object outside photo center gives less chance of "flash reflection"

Slow motion video with normal camera?

Wanna shoot some slow motion action but no high-speed camera around? You can.

"Slow-mow" glass splash in water on 25 FPS 320x240 cam (click to zoom)

VLC video player can play video in with speed change or extract a clip from video.

Command used to extract ALL frames from video:
 ffmpeg -i /home/video.avi Pictures%d.jpg

Now we can check that sexy/action clip frame by frame or record "slow motion" videos. Seems like time distortions of all sorts are now very popular.

How to install wireless card drivers on Linux

Getting Linux connected to wireless network can be done in many ways:

-Find driver, install it and configure network settings

I.Find out if your card was recognized with these commands: iwconfig, iwlist, lspci and lsusb.
II.Linux driver may be located on manufacturer website, google or on CD that come with card.
III.Once driver is installed try to configure it with nm-applet, Wicd wireless manager or with command-line tools mentioned above.
Bad signal and encryption are common problems when connecting to wireless network.

-Buy Linux friendly Wi-Fi card

Many cheap "no-name" cards like this Minitar use ZyDas chip that work out of the box with distributions like Ubuntu and Puppy

-Use Windows driver with Ndiswrapper

Ndiswrapper allows to use Windows driver (.ini and .sys files) with wireless adapter on Linux computer.
  1. install ndiswrapper
  2. locate the .inf file
  3. /sbin/modprobe ndiswrapper

-Use Linux distribution that have drivers included
example: PinguyOS

Multi proccessing in brain: Process things better with relaxed brains

Multiple things can be brain processed at the same time.
Example: playing simple game while thinking about summer vacations.

Familiar task can be done automatically. Thoughts are often processed "background" while we concentrate on somthing else.

Thoughts can have impact in Frozen-bubble game. Relaxed and non-interfering thoughts can result in great game scores.

Multiprocessing doesn't necessary produce bad results. One process can be done very good while you keep relaxing thoughts on "other channel." Seems like brain works as a whole and good vibrations improve overall performance.

Seems like "autonomous vegetative nervous system" can play game better. Why? Imagine steadily breathing on your own.

Wining strategy for turn-based multiplayer game

In turn based multiplayer match there is common attitude to attack the first positioned player.
Opponents strike the strongest player as he is nearest to victory.

Players attack the strongest in "win or nothing" battle. Even if the battle is very long it will probably be decided in last round in Hedgewars game:

Graph:Leading player change frequently in long 3-player match.

Player influenced by score board selects target .

Similar phenomena is seen in basketball where players could get heavily influenced by score board. It is possible that winning player plays worse and player just behind play good.

Conspiracy happens only in games where players:
-see scores
-recognize other players
-engage in "multiplayer" battles where target decision is possible (no small 1-1 battles) and can conspire against one player

The wining strategy:
Keep low profile (low score) while secretly gaining strategic advantages for final decisions.
Checking score drain energy and concentration.

Question:
Do score boards distract of are useful to players?

Garden computer and TV possible on very cheap

Outdoor electronic fun is possible as gadgets get old.

How to setup computer or television on your garden/balcon?

Tough handling of old electronics is acceptable:

-Few drops of rain shouldn't destroy electronics if they are later dried out. But wet cables may produce electric shock.
-Heavy electronics in garden won't be taken away by thieves.

Extend remote control reach with small mirror

Make remote controls stationary and send IR signals around the corners?

remote control in its dock with mirror directing signals
  • example 1: Air conditioner remote control with small mirror can turn on and off A/C without picking-up or searching for remote control.
  • example 2: Use small mirror to remote control devices that are hidden, behind television or in other room.

Most laptops are equipped with IR that can be programmed to send and receive IR signals. Mirrors can enable computer to become central unit of IR controlled Smart home sistem.

Getting valuable infromation by listening to someones else conversation

Listening to someone else conversation on bus, while trying to read newspaper in bar or just when walking down the park can be both fun and informative.

Valuable information is floating in the air everywhere.

Example: Parent returns from trip and then calls a relative and tells a story from trip. At the same time parent has told a story his son was listening to that story (When talking on cellphone there is potencial to for more than one listener, conference).

Stationary phones can be postitioned in passage, so it offer some privacy while keeping possibility to be heard all over the place.

So next time nobody wants to listen: Walls have ears too. Keep 'em informed!
