Wining strategy for turn-based multiplayer game

In turn based multiplayer match there is common attitude to attack the first positioned player.
Opponents strike the strongest player as he is nearest to victory.

Players attack the strongest in "win or nothing" battle. Even if the battle is very long it will probably be decided in last round in Hedgewars game:

Player influenced by score board selects target .

Similar phenomena is seen in basketball where players could get heavily influenced by score board. It is possible that winning player plays worse and player just behind play good.

Conspiracy happens only in games where players:
-see scores
-recognize other players
-engage in "multiplayer" battles where target decision is possible (no small 1-1 battles) and can conspire against one player

The wining strategy:
Keep low profile (low score) while secretly gaining strategic advantages for final decisions.
Checking score drain energy and concentration.

Question:
Do score boards distract of are useful to players?
