Rendering in real time enable you to move around (example:FPS game) but pre-rendered movies are ones that let CPU process resulting 3d images for longer time (longer than duration of video clip). Longer rendering results in better shadows and overall quality of video/picture. Besides you don't need high end hardware to watch high-grade pre-rendered graphics.
This enable movie producers get "virtual actors" instead of real ones. It is be even possible to make digital version of any actor.
First movie that make graphics photo-realistic was Final Fantasy-The Spirits Within. It was actually only movie that used photo-realistic graphic. Latter even games got more cartoon look instead of photo-realistic. Since 2001 no real photo-realistic movie was made.
Next FF movie (Advent children) had more cartoon look (like animation movies):
