good conditions:
-it's being transfered from start to end (not in peaces)
-download speed is greater than file bitrate; speed don't need to be greater if you have almost complete file and you start watching at begining!
-download progress is (slightly) ahead of playback progress
-you are sure that source won't go offline
Instant playback can be induced on incomplete file when:
downloading audio/video
extracting audio/video from archive
copying audio/video, moving file (from slow usb drive, cdrom)
example:
Watch video from peer-2-peer networks instantly as if you would watch from youtube. You can simply listen to your music instantly too.

Probably this blog entry is backed-up to tape in googleplex.
They aren't random-access-memory (RAM) and need to be played from start to end.

How it works?
you download a movie from someone and speed is at least 130 KB/s to watch CD-size (700M) move with standard lenght (1h 30min~90min)
700MB:90min=700M:(90*60s)=700M:5400s=7M:54s=0.129MB/s=129KB/s (minimum download speed needed so playback won't outgo download speed)
Note that if you have 10 MB downloaded this should work for you.
If you have slower connection you will have to wait for few minutes before opening that incomplete movie..
i tested it with VLC video player and it's just that great feeling when you come to end credits but movie hasn't download jet.
How to get peers that will seed to you with enough speed? do the same to them..
